本週一(9月23日),總統府召開記者會解釋「論文門」事件,發言人為博士論文「不合理」處提出各種解釋,許多理由真假難辨,如今我只針對一點提出質疑。
眾所周知,1983年沒有電腦排版,「兩端對齊」是不可能的。
什麼是「兩端對齊」?
以下這段文字就沒有兩端對齊。
English is the largest language by number of speakers,[10] and the third most-spoken native language in the world, after Standard Chinese and Spanish.[11] It is the most widely learned second language and is either the official language or one of the official languages in almost 60 sovereign states. 這段文字每一行的尾端,忽前忽後,很不美觀。
如今WORDS系統點選「兩端對齊」,轉瞬間上文便可排成下文:

看到了吧——尾端十分整齊,可是這功能在1983年根本不存在。
小英當年提交的論文,其中90%(334頁)都呈現兩端對齊——質疑者因這理由,推定那本論文絕非1983年之作。
針對這質疑,總統府發言人如何回應?
發言人說:「論文寫作期間為1981年至1983年,當年是用打字機一頁一頁打,也是一頁一頁設定。有設定就有對齊,沒有設定就沒有對齊。」
乍聽之下十分有道理。
一頁一頁設定有何不可?
可是,你經歷過沒有電腦排版,單純打字機的年代嗎?
打字機是全然「機械式反應」。它無法存檔, 更不可能事先預料「某一行」會從哪一個字跳到下一行。
好比下例英文:

如果使用打字機,實際打完整行以前,請問誰能預料會在「spoken」、「native」,或「language」之後跳行?
不單要準確預料在「spoken」之後跳行,還要了解尾端缺了4個字母。
由於缺了4個字母,所以這一行最前的4個字,每一個字的後面都要塞入1個「空白鍵」。
一行一行設定——想出這理由的人,想必沒有經歷打字機年代。
他的想法是能夠看到螢幕上的檔案,好比以下這段文字:

有了螢幕畫面,再移動「游標」在螢幕上「一行一行設定」,「一字一字調整」,把尾端那個字推到「右邊」界線。
如果是印刷排版,或許有可能。
僅僅使用打字機,缺少螢幕「檔案畫面」,一行一行設定「兩端對齊」,那是天方夜譚!
